Raku Ash-Glazed Tea & Water Jar

฿5,800.00

A handcrafted ceramic jar from the Raku kiln (樂窯) tradition, an art form deeply rooted in over a thousand years of Japanese tea culture. Finished in a natural gray ash glaze, this piece is shaped entirely by hand and fired in a traditional wood kiln, allowing the color and surface to transform organically in the flames.

The Raku tradition traces back to the 16th century, when Sen no Rikyū collaborated with the potter Chōjirō to create ceramics specifically for the tea ceremony. Since then, Raku ware has held a central place in formal Japanese tea practice, valued for its spiritual depth and artistic integrity.

The ash-glazed (hai kabuse-yū) surface is created as wood ash from the kiln melts into the glaze during firing, producing natural variations in tone and texture. No two pieces are ever the same. The surface retains visible handmade marks, conveying warmth, softness, and the quiet beauty of imperfection.

The original lid, fitted with a rounded rubber seal, allows the jar to close tightly, making it suitable for storing tea, coffee, or water. Fired at high temperatures in a wood kiln, the piece offers both durability and strong artistic presence.

Produced between the 1980s and 1990s, this jar is now 30–40 years old, in excellent condition, and exists as a single, one-of-a-kind piece with growing collectible value.

Versatile in use, it may serve as a tea or coffee container, a small storage vessel, a flower vase when the lid is removed, or a calming decorative object for a desk or dining table.
