A masterfully crafted Japanese bronze vase by the renowned metal artisan Genshō (元祥), created during the mid-Showa period (c.1950–1970)—a time when traditional metalcraft reached a mature balance of strength, symbolism, and refined aesthetics.
Japanese bronze artistry traces its roots to the Edo period and has long been used in tea ceremony and ikebana, valued for its dignified presence and auspicious motifs. This work features a dynamic phoenix and peony relief, both deeply symbolic in East Asian culture: the phoenix represents peace and prosperity, while the peony signifies wealth and abundance. Together, they convey wishes for harmony, success, and lasting fortune.
The vase is formed from high-quality bronze with a striking two-tone finish. The mouth and base display a deep brown patina, while the body is finished in darker bronze, richly hand-carved in full relief. Every feather and petal is meticulously chiseled, creating depth, movement, and a strong sculptural presence.
With its substantial 6.7 kg weight and balanced proportions, the vase functions beautifully as a flower vessel or as a standalone decorative object, bringing calm authority to tea rooms, living spaces, or entryways.
Produced in the mid-Showa era, this piece is now 50–70 years old, preserved in excellent condition with no oxidation or damage, and accompanied by its original wooden box. Only one piece is available, enhancing its collectible value.
