A refined Kyoto Kiyomizu (Kyō-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki) matcha bowl rooted in a ceramic tradition with over 400 years of history, developed in the Edo period (17th century) and long associated with tea masters and courtly culture.
The bowl is finished in a deep tenmoku black glaze, fired at high temperature to achieve a soft, light-absorbing surface ideal for the tea ceremony. Over this calm black ground, a plum blossom motif is delicately hand-painted in 24K gold. In Japanese tea culture, plum blossoms symbolize renewal, resilience, and good fortune, making the design especially meaningful.
Formed in a classic matcha bowl (chawan) shape, the proportions allow for smooth whisking and a comfortable hold. Subtle handmade marks remain visible, preserving the warmth and quiet presence valued in wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Produced in the mid-Showa period (c.1950–1970), this piece is now 50–70 years old, preserved in excellent condition with clear gold detailing and no damage. Only one piece is available, enhancing its collectible appeal.
While ideal for matcha preparation, the bowl may also be used for serving food or as a refined decorative object, blending ritual use with everyday beauty.
